Program for January 17, 2010
(extended edition 21:00--02:00. This program was slated for 1/10/10, but I was preempted by UMass hockey. A sports preemption this late on a Sunday is extremely rare. The last time it happened to Martian Gardens was about ten years ago. There are no further preemptions scheduled for Martian Gardens through the end of the spring semester. I have postponed the date-sensitive material from Varese and Xenakis (with the accompanying musique concrete piece by Ferrari) which I programmed anticipating the Poème électronique event at Judson Church, January 15, in favor of the Berio and Baker pieces (set two) in honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the federal MLK Day observed 1/18/10. EMF will be collaborating with The Drawing Center through March, 2010, thus I will broadcast Varèse, Xenakis, and related materials in the coming weeks. -- Max)

A taste of Amecher and Lockwood

I was sad to hear earlier this fall from a mutual friend that the installation artist and composer Maryanne Amacher had died on October 22 at her Kingston, NY, home at the age of 70. I rarely broadcast Amacher's work on MG because the installation nature of most of her work requires the experience of being there and thus is not conducive to radio play. Ms. Amacher was a great artist who never got as much recognition as she deserved.



On the December 6 edition of Martian Gardens, I included a long selection of Annea Lockwood's masterpiece "A Soundmap of the Danube." My selection was recorded in the Croatian region. Here is a short dance to more music from "A Sound Map of the Danube" performed by dancer and choreographer Paloma McGregor as part of the "60 x 60 Dance at Galapagos" series presented by last September 6 at Galapagos art space at D.U.M.B.O. Brooklyn by "60 x 60" director Robert Voisey:
